About MTG PBM’s Sponsor of the Month for February
Ray De Guzman, owner-operator of Tobey’s
Games Café Manila franchises from Tobey Tamber. The first Tobey’s was setup in
Taiwan in 2006 and has grown four more in the former Formosa, making its Manila
branch the 5th store all-in-all. The shop is a short walk from EDSA –
walk from Shaw towards Starmall, walk across where the jeeps are then walk towards
Bermuda (you will know what I’m talking about when you try it yourself), turn
right (you are now on Sultan Street) and follow the bending street, Tobey’s
will be at the corner (Mariveles Street) to your left.
Tobey’s is a dedication to the table-top gaming
human. Various games occupy its walls. The seats are sized for a very
comfortable dueling experience (multiplayer, too, I must throw the obvious).
The café girls are friendly and, more importantly, are part of what makes Tobey’s
a place for gaming – they play, too. There is enough interior seating for 15
pairs, matches can also take place at tables outside (plus Tobey’s has access
to some other areas in the building – ready for bigger events with larger
attendances). Don’t get me started on the air-conditioning – it can get real
cold inside.
Tobey’s also stocks on CCG staples such as
boosters and sleeves. Tournaments are projected to fire as many as four flights
in between sleeps. Ray and the girls have stayed, without minding, late as
morning to keep up with players who decide to grind longer than most –
something that isn’t offered by a lot of shops of its kind. But I daresay, that
Tobey’s goes beyond being just another hobby shop of the common sort. Their
operation hours are hard to beat. Their attack on games goes beyond sales and
tournaments. This is because Ray sees gaming as a lifestyle and his
perspectives for the future of Filipino gaming is visionary. I can’t speak for
something that every planeswalker must experience to understand. So here’s the
address so you can see for yourself.
